NZ Prime Minister visits PNG to mark 50 years of friendship

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon is in the country to celebrate 50 years of enduring friendship with PNG.

Luxon touched down at Port Moresby's APEC terminal on a New Zealand Royal Airforce aircraft shortly after 6pm last night and was met with a full ceremonial welcome, including a 19 - gun salute and a guard of honor.

Deputy Prime Minister John Rosso, Foreign Affairs Minister Justin Tkatchenko and NCD Governor Powes Parkop were among dignitiaries that received the New Zealand PM.

Immediately afterwards, Luxon proceeded to APEC House for a state dinner hosted by his counterpart, James Marape .

In his address , Mr Marape acknowledged New Zealand as a foundational friend and partner, since 1975.

Luxon says this visit is special because New Zealand was one of the eight nations that recognized PNG on the day of its independence apart from Australia and the United Kingdom.

He says New Zealand remains committed to support PNG's development, prosperity and security.

Meantime, the New Zealand Prime Minister is schedule to pay a courtesy call on Governor General Sir Bob Dadae and address the National Parliament at 10am.

Prime Minister Luxon will take part in a memorial plaque dedication for a historic tree at the New Zealand High Commission in Port Moresby. The tree was originally planted by Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare and former New Zealand Prime Minister Sir Robert Muldoon.

He will then visit the Goldie Military Barracks, followed by a tour of the Fred Hollows Foundation and the Port Moresby General Hospital.

At 4pm , both Prime Ministers will hold bilateral talks to discuss regional security , trade and climate change .

The days' program wraps up with a 50th anniversary reception.
