Security concerns prompt calls to relocate Usino-Bundi by-election counting

Preparations are progressing at the Opotio Rimoru Hall in Walium Station for the counting of votes for the Usino-Bundi by-election.
Returning Officer Terence Baiyo said counting is expected to begin this week. Polling in the district concluded last Friday, and Baiyo confirmed that preparations on the ground are on track.
However, Madang Provincial Police Commander and Security Operations Commander for the by-election, Acting Superintendent Robert Baim, has formally requested the PNG Electoral Commission to shift the counting venue to Madang Town. As of today, no response has been received.
Baim cited security concerns following two separate incidents involving candidates, both of whom have been arrested, and the lack of reliable power supply at Walium Station, which has been without electricity for seven months.
He emphasized that a neutral venue would help avoid potential disruptions during the counting process. Several candidates have supported this proposal and are holding a meeting this afternoon with election officials in Walium to discuss the matter further.
The Returning Officer noted that additional funding would be required if the counting is relocated to Madang Town.
