A fire on Monday, 21st July, destroyed food rations, tools, kitchen utensils, and important documents at the Barawagi Correctional Service [CIS] facility in Simbu Province.

In response, the Simbu and Jiwaka Provincial Governments acted swiftly to provide relief assistance.

The Jiwaka Provincial Government and Administration visited the Barawagi CIS prison camp on Friday with food rations specifically for detainees from Jiwaka Province.

Jiwaka Provincial Administrator Rick Kogen told NBC News that Governor Simon Kaiwi’s office allocated K5,000 worth of rations to support the facility.

“This is part of the continued support we’ve provided since I took office,” Kogen said.

“Jiwaka doesn’t have its own CIS facility, and many of the detainees here are from our province. That’s why we always step in to assist when needed.”

He added that the support falls under Governor Kaiwi’s Law & Order program, with the K5,000 dedicated solely to food supplies.

Acting Commander of Barawagi CIS, Mr Mahino Kunopaso, thanked both Simbu and Jiwaka governments for their quick intervention.

“We’re looking after state prisoners in a correction and rehabilitation facility, and without food or resources, we’re helpless. We truly appreciate this timely support,” he said.

Kunopaso confirmed that Kundiawa Fire Services are currently investigating the cause of the blaze. Once the investigation is complete, Barawagi CIS plans to redesign and seek further support from both provinces to rebuild the destroyed storeroom.

Meanwhile, Station Commander Sergeant Peter Sine announced that Barawagi CIS will temporarily stop accepting new prisoners.

“We’ve suspended new intakes until further notice,” Sergeant Sine said.

The Simbu Provincial Government contributed K10,000 worth of food rations, with Jiwaka backing the effort with an additional K5,000.
