Western Highlands students at Holy Trinity Teachers College received a K586,000 cheque yesterday. The funding came from the provincial government’s school fee subsidy program.

The program also benefits Students from outside provinces whose parents have been living and working in Western Highlands for couple of years.

A total of 243 students from Western Highlands starting from the first to final year [in-service students] will each receive K2,000 from the money that will go towards their tuition fee for this year.

Western Highlands Tertiary Students School Fee Subsidy Program Coordinator Elton Kewa who was at the campus to present the cheque said the program started in 2023 after Wai Rapa got in as Governor.

Mr Rapa saw the need and struggle parents faced especially when it came to their children progressing onto Tertiary education.

Mr Kewa said initially the program began with a K5 million awarded to the program however in 2024 and this year the program received an increased support of another K5 million making it K10 million.

The program will continue under the reign of Governor Wai Rapa.

Holy Trinity Teachers College Principal Elizabeth Oga on behalf of the college staff, administration and students thanked Governor Rapa for the initiative.

Western Highlands student representatives, including those from outside the province, thanked Governor Wai Rapa for the support. They said no previous government had introduced such a school fee subsidy program and thanked Governor Rapa’s effort as a historic step for the province.
