Madang's police chief, Acting Superintendent Robert Baim, says the by- election in the Usino/ Bundi District is progressing well despite minor disruptions and logistical challenges.

He says, "The Electoral Commission, supported by the security forces, remains committed to ensuring a peaceful and transparent electoral process. Several polling teams were transported to their respective polling stations via helicopter yesterday, ensuring timely deployment across the district. One polling team for Gama LLG was safely transported via motorized dinghy through the Ramu River, accompanied by security personnel."

A minor dispute between two candidates arose yesterday, but it was swiftly addressed and resolved by the security team, demonstrating the effectiveness of the security arrangements in place.

Meanwhile, the first teams to complete polling were the polling teams at Danagari and Banu in the Bundi LLG. The ballot boxes for these polling places are currently secured at Walium police station, where they are being locked in a police cell due to the unavailability of proper storage containers.

Baim adds, "Despite delays in allowances for security personnel, police officers demonstrated their dedication by deploying with their polling teams, ensuring that the electoral process continues without interruption. Security measures have been significantly reinforced with the deployment of Mobile Squad 13 and Sector Patrol Units [SRU] from Lae. These units are actively patrolling the district to maintain order and ensure the safety of all voters."

He is also issuing a stern warning to all candidates and supporters to allow the electoral process to proceed without disruption.

PPC Baim warns, "Any attempts to interfere, cause disturbances, or intimidate voters and officials will not be tolerated. We will take strong and decisive action against anyone attempting to disrupt the election."

He further emphasized police commitment to the exercise, stressing, "Our role is to support the Electoral Commission and facilitate a free, fair, and peaceful election. Anyone trying to undermine this process will face arrest and prosecution."

PPC Baim further calls on all candidates and supporters to cooperate and respect the democratic process. The community’s participation and peaceful conduct are vital in ensuring that the people’s choice is respected and that the democratic will is upheld.

"Allow the election process to be completed peacefully. The people must have the opportunity to choose their representatives for the National Parliament without fear or intimidation," emphasises Acting Superintendent Baim.

As the election progresses, authorities remain vigilant and committed to maintaining peace and order, ensuring that the voices of the people of Usino/ Bundi are heard and respected.
