Students and teachers of Karamui High School in the remote Salt-Nomane Karamui District have formally petitioned Simbu Provincial Police Commander [PPC] Superintendent Mazuc Rubiang to address the deteriorating law and order situation in the area.

The petition follows recent tribal violence and murders that have forced the closure of Karamui High School, along with five surrounding primary schools. The prolonged unrest has left students falling behind in their studies, and teachers fearing for their safety.

Head teacher of Karamui High School, Samuel Yarepa, said the community is desperate for immediate police intervention.

“Our students are falling far behind in their education. We urgently need the PPC to resolve these devastating law and order issues for the sake of their future,” Mr. Yarepa said.

He thanked Supt Rubiang for recognizing the gravity of the situation and becoming the first-ever PPC to travel to the remote district to address such concerns in person.

Supt Rubiang, in response, assured the school and local community that Karamui has now been declared a red flag zone and is a top priority for Simbu police operations.

“I understand your concerns. The shortage of police personnel and lack of logistics, equipment, and communication technology have hampered effective policing. However, we are committed to restoring law and order,” he said.

The Simbu PPC said limited manpower directly affects the police’s ability to patrol remote areas, respond quickly to emergencies, and investigate crimes efficiently. Despite the challenges, he reaffirmed the police force’s dedication to enforcing the law and ensuring public safety.

“Let me assure teachers and students that we will do what it takes to restore normalcy. Schools, aid posts, SMEs, and local businesses must return to full operation,” Rubiang said.

Supt Rubiang also commended Sergeant Gideon Lumbia and the Kundiawa Police Composite Squad, who were deployed earlier to stabilize the situation. He confirmed that five suspects involved in a recent murder and related tribal fights have been arrested and airlifted to Goroka.

He concluded by urging the community to take ownership of the situation.

“Addressing law and order is not just the police’s responsibility. It begins with every one of us. Let’s work together to build a safer, more peaceful Karamui where disputes are resolved through dialogue and legal channels, not violence,” Supt Rubiang said.
