The Touch Federation of Papua New Guinea [TFPNG] has delivered a two day referee clinic in Northern Province, aimed at strengthening the capacity and quality of officiating in the region.

Organised in partnership with the Popondetta Touch Association, the clinic focused on referee education and certification to support the growth of touch football across the province. The workshop was facilitated by TFPNG Referee Director Michael Imo and Technical Director Buddy Mitau.

The two-day program included both theoretical and practical components, where first day featured the Introductory Level Referees Course, covering the basic rules and principles of touch football, field positioning, signaling, whistle techniques, and hands-on practical drills, including simulated match officiating.

Day two delivered the Level 1 Referees Course, focusing on advanced officiating techniques, effective game management, communication and decision-making under pressure, team refereeing mechanics, and practical assessments through scenario-based learning.

A total of 33 participants comprising 25 males and 8 females took part in the clinic, representing various touch football clubs and communities from across the province.

Following the clinic, key recommendations were made to sustain the momentum. These included ongoing mentorship, the need for further training sessions, and the appointment of a local referee coordinator under the Popondetta Touch Association to monitor and guide the progress of referees in the area.

TFPNG Technical Director Buddy Mitau described the workshop as a success and praised the local organisers for their commitment and support.

“We acknowledge the efforts and hospitality of the Popondetta Touch Association, whose local coordination was essential in ensuring the smooth running of the event,” Mitau said.

“The strong turnout and level of engagement confirm that Oro Province is ready to grow its referee base and further strengthen its presence in the national touch football landscape.”

“We look forward to continued support and collaboration in developing grassroots officiating programs across all regions.”
