Hundreds of enthusiastic participants braved the rain to take part in the 25th Trukai Fun Run in Lae, turning the city streets yellow with energy and unity yesterday.

The annual event, which began at 7am from Eriku Oval, followed a route through Lae Town and back. Despite the wet conditions, spirits remained high as families, school groups, business houses, and athletes ran for a worthy cause.

Finishing first with an impressive time of 30 minutes were Scolastica Herman and Morvin Sari — both affiliated with the PNG athletics scene. Herman, 22, is a current member of the Lae-based PNG Athlete team, while Sari is a former Lae athlete.

“I just ran at my own pace to the finishing line, following the route guide, and happened to meet Morvin. We held hands and ran together to finish,” Herman said, beaming with pride.

Security and safety were well managed by personnel from Buimo Correctional Services and soldiers from Igam Barracks, with medical support provided by St John Ambulance.

Anderson Poumb, Team Leader of St John Ambulance in Lae, said no injuries were reported throughout the event.

“Our officers were on the ground and also ran with participants to make sure everything went smoothly,” Poumb said.

The Trukai Fun Run continues to be more than just a sporting event — it’s a national effort to support Team PNG.

Since its inception in 2000, the event has helped raise funds for Papua New Guinea’s participation in international competitions including the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, Pacific Games, and Mini Games.

This year’s proceeds from the Trukai Fun Run Auction and retail shirt sales will go toward sending Team PNG to the 2025 Pacific Mini Games in Palau, scheduled for June 29 to July 9.
