Works Department signs MoU with DataCo to boost digital infrastructure

The Department of Works and Highways [DoWH] has formalised a strategic partnership with DataCo PNG Limited through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding [MoU], marking a key milestone in inter-agency collaboration for the Connect PNG Telecommunication System Project.
The MoU, signed in Port Moresby by Works Secretary Gibson Holemba and DataCo chief executive officer Paul Komboi, aims to transition ongoing discussions into tangible project implementation under the broader Connect PNG Economic Infrastructure Development Program.
Works Secretary Holemba described the agreement as a vital step forward in enhancing both physical and digital connectivity throughout Papua New Guinea.
Holemba said the MoU outlines the framework for collaboration, particularly in delivering telecommunication system projects along major road corridors, aligning with the Government’s vision of connecting the country not just physically through roads, but also digitally through reliable communication infrastructure.
He further stated that the MoU provides a general framework to guide the partnership between DoWH and DataCo PNG Ltd, ensuring effective cooperation in accordance with the respective laws, regulations, policies, and procedures of each agency.
As part of the implementation process, a joint working committee will be established to oversee the partnership’s progress and coordinate activities under the agreement.
The partnership is expected to significantly support national efforts to improve digital access in remote and underserved regions as infrastructure under the Connect PNG program expands.
