Tahnee Norris to lead PNG Orchids to 2026 Rugby League World Cup

Former Australian Jillaroos star Tahnee Norris will continue as head coach of the PNG Orchids, with the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League [PNGRFL] confirming a two-year contract extension ahead of the 2026 Rugby League World Cup.
PNGRFL CEO Stanley Hondina announced the reappointment this week, expressing strong confidence in Norris’s leadership and experience on the international stage.
“Tahnee has been part of the game internationally and brings a wealth of knowledge in women’s rugby league,” said Hondina.
“She has an impressive resume, having contributed significantly to the growth of women’s football in Australia. The PNGRFL board, with full support from director Lorna McPherson, stands behind her as she leads the Orchids into the next World Cup.”
Norris, who took over from former coach Ben Jeffries last year, led the national women’s team through their 2024 Pacific Championships campaign. Her extended tenure will now focus on building a competitive squad for the 2026 World Cup in Australia.
“I see so much potential in PNG,” Norris said. “I’m excited about the Santos Cup and the depth of talent coming through. Over the next two years, it’s going to be amazing to watch these players grow and strengthen ahead of the World Cup.”
Norris emphasized the importance of establishing a strong domestic competition to develop local talent capable of competing internationally. She also acknowledged the increased level of competition the Orchids will face in 2026.
“With more teams, including additional Pacific Island nations, the tournament will be tougher than ever,” she said.
“The strength of the NRLW is elevating players in Samoa, the Cook Islands, and New Zealand. We know we’ll be up against stronger sides, so our development now is key to competing at the top level.”
The PNG Orchids, currently ranked fifth in the International Rugby League standings, will face the Australian Defence Force team and the Brisbane Broncos in upcoming test matches as part of their lead-up to the Pacific Championships and World Cup preparations.
Norris said the focus will remain on player development, exposure to high-level competition, and establishing a sustainable pathway for future generations of women’s rugby league players in PNG.
