Aropa airport to pioneer NAC’s first solar farm project

Aropa Airport in Central Bougainville will become the first airport under the National Airports Corporation [NAC] to launch a solar farm project, marking a significant step towards sustainable and cost-effective energy use in Papua New Guinea's aviation sector.
NAC Acting Managing Director, Dominic Kaumu, confirmed the initiative, stating it aligns with NAC’s commitment to promoting renewable energy solutions across its network of airports.
The NAC is currently in discussions with PNG Power Ltd and other partners to move the project forward. The solar farm is expected to reduce operational costs and contribute to environmental sustainability at the airport.
Mr. Kaumu also acknowledged the ongoing support of the Asian Development Bank [ADB], which has played a key role in funding and supporting infrastructure improvements across the country’s airports.
NAC is exploring a similar solar energy initiative for Tomodachi International Airport in Lae, Morobe Province, as part of its continued focus on green energy solutions in the aviation sector.
