Defending champions Auckland United FC have taken a big step toward the semi-finals of the OFC Women’s Champions League with a 2 - 1 win over Hekari Women’s FC in a rematch of last year’s final.

The New Zealanders came into the match with confidence after their 2023 title win but were pushed hard by a physical and determined Hekari side from Papua New Guinea.

Auckland struck first just before the break. A lofted cross caused confusion in the Hekari box, and after a failed clearance, Alaina Granger reacted quickest to prod home in the 42nd minute.

The second half belonged largely to Auckland. Head coach Ben Bate’s halftime talk seemed to spark new life into his players, and they quickly asserted control. Substitute Ava Pritchard made an immediate impact, smashing a right-footed effort past goalkeeper Betty Sam in the 55th minute to double the lead.

Winger Pia Vlok was a standout on the right flank, constantly pressuring Hekari’s defence and creating early chances—including one for Zoe Benson, who couldn’t convert.

Hekari’s best first-half opportunity came from Ramona Padio, whose shot flew just wide. In defence, Maria Veronika stood out with crucial blocks to keep the score close before halftime.

Auckland goalkeeper Hannah Mitchell had little to do for most of the match but was beaten in stoppage time when Shalom Waida headed in from a corner, giving Hekari a late consolation.

The result keeps Auckland United unbeaten and top of Group B. They now turn their focus to a match against PanSa FC of American Samoa. Hekari, meanwhile, will aim to bounce back against AS Pirae on Sunday.
