Prime Minister James Marape launched the Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea’s (BFPNG) latest initiative — a new competition tailored for former and veteran basketball players.

Dubbed the 'Prime Minister’s 2025 Golden Jubilee Oldies Challenge', the social competition aims to promote healthy and active lifestyles for individuals aged 40 and above, while also rekindling their passion for the game.

The launch event, held at the Sir John Guise Indoor Complex, transformed the venue into a lively hub of entertainment, as the inaugural match saw former basketball stars including members of the 2017 Melanesian Cup champions and Team PNG legends from the 1991 South Pacific Games, take to the court, reigniting fond memories among fans and players alike.

Prime Minister Marape, a longtime supporter of sports development, was joined by key stakeholders from the sporting community, including National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop and BFPNG Patron Charles Abel and president David Peter.

The initiative received widespread praise for its potential to foster a healthier and more connected society through sport.

“The Golden Oldies Challenge isn’t just about basketball; it’s about transformation through wellness, community, and inclusion,” Abel said.

Games will be held twice weekly, every Tuesday and Thursday with finals slated for later this year.
