Death threat suspect nabbed in Madang

A young man suspected of issuing death threats against Madang's Provincial Member, Ramsey Pariwa, and acting Provincial Administrator, Daniel Aloi, on social media has been taken in for questioning by police.
The 27- year old man of highlands origin, has allegedly disseminated the threats on Facebook.
The post went viral after it was shared on the Madang Town Updates page, featuring an image of high- powered rifles.
The suspect in his post warned Pariwa and Aloi from taking office; hinting possible violence.
Madang's Provincial Police Commander, acting Superintendent Robert Baim, has described the threat as 'severe', both to provincial and national security.
He said, “this is a grave situation that not only threatens the safety of our provincial leaders but also disturbs the peace and stability of Madang Province. We are treating this case with the utmost urgency.”
Mr Baim also emphasized in a press statement, "the critical importance of responsible social media usage", urging the public to be mindful of the consequences of their online activities.
Baim said there are rules governing whatever we post on social media, and such threats will not be taken lightly.
"The suspect will be dealt with severely,” he added.

The suspect, identified as Mark Gasap from Wabag District in Enga Province, was successfully located and arrested through the collaborative efforts of the Madang Transnational Crime Unit [TCU] and the National Criminal Intelligence Unit [NCIU].
He was arrested at Sisiak, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Gasap faces charges under both the Cyber Crime Act and the Counter Terrorism Act, as his actions have been deemed real and an imminent threat to public safety.
Police authorities understand the gravity of the case, particularly in light of recent administrative changes in the Madang Provincial Administration following a court ruling on March 7, 2025, which resulted in Mr Aloi assuming office as the acting Provincial Administrator.
“While the change in administration may have caused some tensions, there is absolutely no place for threats or violence in this country. We will ensure the law is upheld, and anyone who attempts to undermine our leadership or the safety of our people will face the full force of the law,” Baim said.
The swift arrest is seen as a decisive response to what officials have labelled "a national security threat."
Gasap, meanwhile; remains in custody, with legal proceedings set to follow.
Authorities in the province are maintaining vigilant oversight of the situation, and police have called on the community to remain calm, encouraging citizens to report any suspicious activities.
Baim said, "This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential repercussions of misuse of social media and the importance of maintaining peace and security in the region."
