For generations, the Vanagi Race has been more than just a competition; it is a celebration of the Motu-Koita people’s canoe-making skills and is a part of their heritage.

This year, Trukai Industries Limited [TIL] has renewed its support for the Vanagi Race, reaffirming its commitment to the Motu-Koita people in this activity as a way of preserving their culture with a sponsorship of K80,000.

The Trukai Vanagi Race is set to take place on 5 April at Era Kone, Ela Beach. The race itself is a test of strength and teamwork. Last year, 60 canoes took to the waters and saw Ankit Jalova claim victory for the A Grade Category while Saubolo and Heraky took second and third place respectively. This year, the event expects to have more than 50 canoes and 160 participants.

Trukai Industries’ Marketing Manager Peggy Maha discussed the significance of this support.

“The Vanagi Race is a celebration of traditional skills honed over time and is an integral part of the Motu Koita people’s identity,” said Maha.

“Trukai is proud to be the naming right sponsor and looks forward to this year’s race.”

Trukai’s sponsorship of K80,000 will go toward the prize money for the winners and operational costs for the event.

“We wish all participants the best of luck as we anticipate a fast finish on the waters of Ela Beach. And we hope to see the Port Moresby community at the race,” reiterated Maha.

Hiri Moale Festival Organizing Committee representative Molly O’Rourke, on behalf of the Motu Koita Assembly Chairman Hon Dadi Toka Jnr, thanked Trukai Industries for their continuous support as the Naming Rights Sponsors for four years.

“Your commitment to this event, not only brings the event's culture alive, but it also brings communities and villages together to celebrate the Hiri Moale Festival. Let us together celebrate another successful event this year on the eve of PNG’s 50th Anniversary,” said O’Rourke.

The Trukai Vanagi Race, the festival’s main sporting event, will take place on Saturday, 5 April. With stronger winds, bigger waves, and new challengers, this year’s race promises to be an unforgettable battle on the water.
