Lae-Kabwum road 13km complete

Morobe Government’s Lae-Kabwum road is 13 kilometers complete since the construction started in December last year.
The 100km road will link three districts Kabwum, Nawaeb, and Lae, one of the vital projects that is set to encourage more government service once compete.
Provincial Service Improvement Plan coordinator Sebastian Singery said the roads initial budget was K10 million and so far, it has only sourced K3m through the Morobe Provincial Government.
Singery explained that the desktop feasibility of the project was done in 2021 and a survey in 2023 by the provincial works.
He said the challenges encountered during the actual work and slow funding would delay the completion of the road.
“Because it is a newly cut road, it will take a long time with the weather, logistics, and of course funding that is coming like drips n drops,” the Morobe PSIP coordinator said.
Singery commanded the work of local contractor Nafisika and the Kabwum communities who are taking ownership to assist to keep the project going.
With Papua New Guinea preparing to celebrate its 50 years of Independence, some parts of the country remain disconnected from basic government services.
He said one of the reasons was because of the lack of road access.
The PSIP coordinator said the yet-to-be complete road will be a lifeline for the people of Kabwum, apart from the Fisika road that is funded by the National Government through the Finchsafen District Development Authority.
