Duty officer to be charged with criminal negligence

The police officer on duty when the suspect who killed his wife in Bereina escaped from custody may face charges for criminal negligence.
Assistant Commissioner Benjamin Turi said he has asked the Provincial Police Commander for Central to investigate how the suspect escaped and identify any officers who might have ignored the situation.
ACP Turi says it's unlikely an officer would leave a suspect alone, especially to get food, knowing it's wrong to leave a suspect unattended.
“The process of how we deal with suspects and stop the record of interview is to make sure the suspect is taken back to his cell, locked up before we go out for a break or to look for food but unfortunately the officer in question decided to do things his way.”
Mr. Turi said that the suspect, Willie Emai, has been hiding since escaping custody, which is a setback for the victim’s family and the case.
Meanwhile, Central Provincial Police Commander Joseph Salle confirmed that the officer involved has been suspended, and administrative charges will be brought against him.
PPC Salle is asking Willie Emai’s family to help the police by providing information on his location, as he is considered dangerous and a threat to the community.
