Security challenges remain a concern for PNG’s energy sector growth

Despite the promising growth potential in Papua New Guinea's mineral, petroleum, and energy sectors, security challenges continue to threaten progress, especially in specific regions.

Policy and Analysis Manager for the PNG Chamber of Resource and Energy [PNG CORE], Gretel Orake addressed the issue at the 2025 PNG Business Council Praivet Gavamani Konet.

She emphasized that while the industry sees opportunities for growth, addressing security concerns is crucial for ensuring project success.

Orake said the challenges caused by a breakdown in law and order, often driven by tribal conflicts, landowner disputes, and escalating illegal activities.

"These issues have directly impacted project security and hampered development in some areas.

"To tackle these concerns, PNG CORE is actively collaborating with various stakeholders, from local communities to national bodies. The industry’s efforts include strengthening community engagement, restoring infrastructure and social services, advocating for legal and policy reforms, and promoting local economic growth through job creation and development initiatives.

"These actions aim to foster a safer, more stable environment for the continued success of the energy and resource sectors."
