A teacher from Jiwaka, who was teaching in the Koroba Kopiago district of Hela Province, lost four fingers following an attack last week in Tari.

The victim, Anwai Yei, was brutally attacked at the Bata compound near Tari Town last Wednesday at around 2pm by an individual believed to be under the influence of alcohol.

Yei, who had been teaching at Paka Primary School for nearly a decade, said that the fingers on his right hand were chopped off for reasons unknown to him.

“These are the four fingers that have served the students of Hela for the past 10 years,” he said.

Mr. Yei, who is currently receiving treatment at Hela Provincial Hospital, is one of the many public servants who continue to serve the province despite the ongoing law and order issues.

Tari Town community leader John Tipa condemned the accident and urged the public to assist the police in apprehending the suspect.

“We strongly condemn the actions of this deranged individual. The perpetrator must be identified, and anyone with information about this person should come forward and report it to the police,” Tipa stated.

“This suspect must be brought to justice to face the full extent of the law.”

Hela Education Services Director Ronny Angu emphasized the importance of quality education in the province; however, the disruptive actions of certain individuals continue to hinder developmental progress.

Mr. Tipa said that this situation poses significant threats to all public servants in Hela. He urged the locals to be responsible and to look after those who provide services to the community.

“We can’t sit back and watch our sacrificing public servants slaughtered like animals,” he said.

Meanwhile, efforts to obtain comments from the police were unsuccessful.
