Government to honor Sir J’s will in state funeral

The revised state funeral program for the late Sir Julius Chan has been made as per his will.
The program will commence tomorrow, Sunday, 2nd February with a state funeral at St. Mary's cathedral in Downtown, Port Moresby followed by the hauskrai at Sir John Guise stadium scheduled from 5-9 pm.
Prime Minister James Marape clarified that government has agreed to his will, and will not go ahead with the initial plan of recalling parliament, as is tradition for a sitting Member who passed while in office.
Marape said government arranged a state tribute in parliament, aligning with a seven-day notice requirement for a parliamentary recall. But, PM Marape in respect to Sir J's decision said his was firm in honoring his will – that he be buried within seven days in Huris.
In his will, Sir Julius designated three days for the government, similarly for the province to mourn, and burial on the seventh day.
Prime Minister Marape said parliament will dedicate its first sitting in March to condolence messages and recognition of Sir Julius Chan's lifetime of service.
