New Ireland prepares to receive fallen political icon for the last time

Preparations for Sir Julius Chan's final moments in his home province have started with the provinical government spearheading funeral arrangements.

An urgent meeting was called this morning at the New Ireland Provincial Assembly by Acting Governor Sammy Missen to discuss arrangements for the Kavieng leg of the funeral program.

High on agenda was the discussion of the role of Provincial Government and Administration on the ground to accommodate NIP funeral arrangements and visitors that will be travelling in.

The body of PNG's fallen political icon was handed over to State yesterday by his family for national hauskrai program and high-profile farewell by the government in hornor of his contributions and service to the country.

A program released by government has outlined key events including the funeral service which will be held tomorrow at St Mary's Cathedral in Port Moresby then followed by the evening hauskrai program at Sir John Guise Indoor Complex.

Sir J's casket will be taken to National Parliament on Monday where Members of parliament and state dignitaries will pay their last respect before departing to Kavieng.

The national government is expected to return the body of retired statesman to his family and the people of New Ireland with a 19 Gun Salute performed by PNG Defence Force.

Meanwhile, all hire cars and accommodation in Kavieng are running out as bookings have already begun since the official announcement of Sir J's passing.
