Sir J to be accorded state funeral as body arrives in Port Moresby

Prime Minister James Marape along with State Ministers, senior government officials, and other dignitaries, received the casket of one of Papua New Guinea’s founding father, the late Sir Julius Chan from home, New Ireland.
The valued leader, who is remembered as the "last man standing," arrived via a chartered Tropic Air flight at 4:30pm to the scene marked by deep emotions at the Apec Terminal.
The body of Sir Julius was accompanied by his wife Lady Stella and family members, who landed to a ceremonial guard of honor, reflecting the highest respect and admiration the country holds for him.
The arrival of his body in Port Moresby signals the start of a 7-day government-led mourning period with plans for a state funeral to honor his enduring contributions.
The body will now be taken to Funeral Home, where a one week national haus krai has been programmed starting tonight.
The first Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister’s passing marks the end of an era that birthed PNG, and beginning of a new generation of leaders as his legacy will undoubtedly remain an essential part of Papua New Guinea’s history.
Prior to handing over his body to the state, Kavieng town came to a standstill this morning, as people prepared to receive the casket of the retired Papua New Guinea’s last surviving founding Father.
All essential service providers, including businesses and schools shut down at 8 am this morning to join everyone at the Kavieng airport.
Deputy Governor Sammy Missen, now acting Governor, members of the provincial executive council, provincial administration and its management team, staff of the Governor’s office, heads of state agencies in the province were all dressed in black to receive late Sir Julius.
