Hunters whizz kid Morea on course to retain fullback position owned by electrifying Wabo

Following his short spell with North Queensland Cowboys at the back end of last year, 2023 Hostplus Cup rookie Morea Morea is embracing another challenge to retain the no.1 spot of PNG Hunters.
Inspired by National Rugby League (NRL) stars from the Cowboys, Morea’s return to Hunters camp adds a daunting task for coach Paul Aiton as the fullback position currently occupied by electrifying Sanny Wabo gets competitive.
And there is no secret, Morea, who spent time with Todd Payten’s group in Cairns is making use of every insightful lessons learnt to reclaim the no.1 jersey owned by Wabo in 2024.
“It was a good experience for me. I learned heaps down there, especially working with NRL players. I learned a lot in communication,” Morea shared his experience during his train-and-trial stint with Cowboys.
“I think going out there helped me communicate a lot better in here (Hunters camp), in attacking and defence as well.
“It was a pretty tough year for me. I was lucky enough at the back end of 2024. But, definitely this year I'm really looking forward to competing for that number one jersey again.
“Sanny obviously owned it last year. We get along really well. People think that we compete in that jersey and we don't get along, but we do get along really well. And now I'm trying to get that jersey back.”

Despite having less game time with Hunters last year, Morea was able to represent PNG in the Prime Ministers XIII side before making a dream Kumul debut against Cook Islands in the Pacific Championship.
The 10 minutes’ game time in Kumul colors provided Morea a valuable opportunity which saw him score a try in Kumuls bowl victory, eventually landing to a trial offer with the Cowboys.
A product of the Central Dabaris, the 23-year-old revealed that a club from Super League is showing interest to secure his service.
But, Morea said at this stage there is nothing substantial as he keeps his focus on earning back his beloved position.
“It hasn't been official yet but a Super League club approached me after the Pacific Champs. We'll see how it goes. For now, focus is Hunters.”
The speedster is hopeful Hunters will maintain their form and compete for finals in the 2025 roster.
