The local Member for Moresby South and Minister for Foreign Affairs Justin Tkatchenko visited the haus krai of a young man from Tari, Hela Province, who died from injuries sustained in an attack by a group of young men.

Tachenko showed up when the incident, which threatened to escalate into an ethnic conflict, saw the grieving family of the deceased demand financial compensation from the families of the alleged suspects.

The Local MP visited the deceased’s family, where they staged a haus cry outside the home of one of the nine suspects.

Tkatchenko acted swiftly, addressing both families and urging calm.

In a strong statement, Tkatchenko condemned the attack that led to the unfortunate death but emphasized the importance of allowing the law to handle the matter.

He reassured both families that the suspects, now in police custody, would have their day in court and reiterated that everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

"I completely condemn the attack and the loss of life," Tkatchenko said.

"However, we can not condone actions that undermine the legal process. The suspects are now in custody, and it is critical that we allow the justice system to take its course. No one is above the law."

Tkatchenko made it clear that his assistance to the deceased's family was not to meet any financial demands but to ensure that the repatriation and funeral arrangements were handled with dignity.

"I am supporting the repatriation and funeral costs so that the family can give their loved one a respectful farewell," he explained.

"This is about ensuring the deceased is laid to rest with the honor he deserves."

He also urged unity among the diverse communities in Kaugere, particularly between Hela and Gulf residents, at a time when division seemed imminent.

"Whether you are from Hela or Gulf, we must stand together," Tkatchenko said.

"Now is the time for solidarity, not for further violence or demands."
