The Accident Investigation Commission [AIC] has released a preliminary report on the crash of the P2-SAM aircraft in Morobe, following a thorough on-site investigation.
The report reveals that the aircraft struck the forest canopy at approximately 8,000 feet, clipping a tree with its right wing before drop to the ground.
Based on the damage observed, the AIC determined that the plane was traveling at a high speed, consistent with an engine-powered flight.
As a result the impact sparked a fire that quickly ignited the aircraft’s fuel, which caused extensive damage and led to the complete destruction of the plane.
The AIC's investigation is ongoing, and it will explore all factors contributing to the crash, including flight operations, maintenance, weather conditions, human factors, and the post-crash survival aspects.
The commission is working to gather all necessary information to determine the full scope of the incident and prevent similar accidents in the future.
