Trukai Industries has successfully trained 51 local rice farmers at Pacific Adventist University through its Smart Farmers Program.

The 20-week program was aimed to equip farmers with essential tools and techniques for transitioning from dry land farming to irrigation-based rice farming.

PAU rice development project manager for Trukai Industries, Thomas Telu said the training today marked the third batch of participants, which included representatives from the Solomon Islands, Central, East Sepik, West New Britain, Western, Oro, East New Britain, Chimbu, Eastern Highlands, and the National Capital District.

Telu said the program consists of four modules: Introduction to Rice, Rice Environment and Irrigation, Rice Cultivation Skills, and Rice Farming and Business Management.

"The program has two components," Telu said.

"The first component is two weeks of theory, while the second component focuses on practical application. During the practical phase, Trukai officials visit the farmers' sites and provide additional skills to enhance their farming knowledge."

The program operates under a public-private partnership designed to improve rice farming techniques and increase productivity.

Meanwhile, farmers shared their enthusiasm for the skills they acquired during the theoretical portion of the training and eagerly anticipated the hands-on experience over the next 18 weeks.

Solomon Islands participant John Kukuha said; "This training has helped us a lot. Now, I am looking forward to implementing the skills back in Beti Kama Adventist College."

Trukai Industries also plans to conduct similar training sessions in Lae in the coming month, continuing its mission to empower rice farmers with modern agricultural practices.
