The Metoreia Urban Health Centre in Hanuabada delivered its first baby on Monday, 13th January signaling the start of the labor ward opening.
Baby Steven, was born to mother, Anthonia Sioa from Hanuabada, weighing 3.5 kg.
Chairman of Motu Koita Assembly Dadi Toka Jnr, who was there to welcome this first birth, said this marked a significant milestone for health services to Motu Koita people with the first baby delivered at the new Metoreia health centre labor ward.
The K41 million facility funded through the PNG-Australia partnership, which was opened in November caters for outpatient, maternal and child health, birthing and inpatient wards.
NCD Provincial Health Authority Acting Chief Executive Dr. Robin Oge announced the centre’s labor ward opening on Monday, 13th January with its first deliveries taking place in the state of the art facility.
He said the new labor ward is equipped with the latest medical technology and staffed by highly trained health care professionals, providing a safe, comfortable and supportive environment for women during labor and delivery.
The delivery and birthing services at the Hanuabada-based health centre is expected to at least ease the burden on Port Moresby General Hospital’s labor and maternity ward, which has been a grave concern shared by health professionals and mothers as well.
