In a bold move to restore law and order in Hela Province, Governor Philip Undialu set to launch a major initiative, following the successful capture of Tasi Parobi, the primary suspect in the murder of First Constable George Lapon.
A newly revamped Police Command Center, formerly the 20 Men Lodge, will serve as the heart of this effort, enhancing the region's capacity to fight crime.
"The Command Center will be a vital intelligence hub, allowing police to track and profile known criminals, including warlords, murderers, and rapists.
"It will operate in collaboration with the courts, Correctional Service, the PNG Defense Force, and local authorities, all working together to ensure justice is swiftly delivered,"Undialu said.
Meanwhile it is a significant step towards greater public involvement.
The center will provide multiple channels for citizens to report crimes, including illegal firearms, alcohol abuse, and violent offenses.
Undialu stressed that crime will no longer be tolerated, stating that offenders, even those who pay compensation, will still face the full force of the law.
He vowed to dismantle the prevailing culture of impunity in Hela, where criminals have long returned to their communities without consequence.
To bolster security, CCTV cameras will be placed at strategic locations, including bus stops, markets, and airports, aiding in the identification of criminals.
In the long term, Hela will see a dramatic increase in police presence, with over 1,000 additional officers and military personnel deployed.
Governor Undialu called on every citizen to take a stand.
“Report and surrender illegal firearms and criminals to ensure a safer, more just and peaceful Hela for all,” He said.
