The Papua New Guinea [PNG] Government has committed to collaborating with national agencies, the British High Commission, and UK authorities to repatriate Keven Appo, the PNG international rugby league player, to face charges of rape and assault in the United Kingdom.

Foreign Affairs Minister Justin Tkatchenko confirmed receiving a briefing on the charges against the 25-year-old player and the details of how he fled the country after being charged by Bradford Magistrate's Court.

“This Government will not tolerate or protect any citizen who has committed a crime abroad and seeks to hide in our country from facing justice.

“We also strongly condemn any acts of violence against women,”Minister Tkatchenko said.

He emphasized the government's firm stance on the matter.

"We utterly reject and will not tolerate such actions. We will work closely with the British High Commission and UK authorities to expedite the extradition process once they submit their request."

Minister Tkatchenko also expressed regret over the incident's impact, noting how it tarnished the positive reputation Papua New Guinea has built in international sports.

"We have around 30 Papua New Guineans excelling in the UK Super League, and the actions of one individual could jeopardize the reputation of all these talented athletes," he said.

He pointed out that legends like Stanley Gene and Makali Azue had worked hard to establish PNG's strong sporting relationships, and one incident could undo years of effort.

While the PNG Government has not yet received the formal extradition request, Tkatchenko confirmed he had initial discussions with British High Commissioner Her Excellency Anne Macro and conveyed the government's commitment to working with the High Commission for a lawful resolution.

“Once we receive the official extradition request, we will ensure that Mr. Appo faces the charges against him in the UK,” Minister Tkatchenko concluded.
