The suspect involved in the death of a policeman in Tari surrendered to police today after Hela Governor Philip Undialu launched a ‘Province-wide Manhunt’ yesterday.

The individual identified as Tasi Parobi, allegedly responsible for the tragic murder of late constable George Lapon, voluntarily surrendered to police and community leaders within 24 hours of launching the manhunt.

Undialu commanded the joint effort of the Tari community under the leadership of John Tipa and Provincial Police Commander Robin Bore for ensuring the suspect was detained.

He assured the relatives of the deceased that justice will prevail.

Governor Undialu called on his people to work together to apprehend such law breakers instead of holding the province at ransom.

“It is crucial to stress that the people of Hela should not be held accountable for this tragic event; rather, it is the responsibility of one individual, who must be held accountable for his actions,” Undialu said prior to the suspect surrendering to police.

The governor expressed concerns that properties were destroyed by security forces in the wake of the incident, with roadblocks staged at Poroma, Southern Highlands, by relatives of the deceased.

With the situation now under control, Undialu notes the leadership of Tipa, in collaborating with PPC Bore, for initiating the manhunt which succeeded.

“Hela cannot be held ransom for the actions of one individual who has taken the law into his own hands. He must be brought to justice,” governor Undialu said.

The alleged cop killer who released a video confirming his involvement in the murder pledged to surrender.

But, nearly two weeks passed, he didn’t avail himself to police, which prompted a provincial search for his apprehension.

PPC Bore said six individuals involved in aiding the suspect’s evasion will face legal consequences.

“This individual has inflicted irreparable damage on Hela by taking the life of a dedicated policeman, and he does not deserve the support of anyone.

“It is alarming that some individuals have the audacity to assist him in hiding. They too are equally responsible and will face consequences,” Undialu said.

Mr Undialu stressed that late George Lapon, a member of the Mobile Squad nine, served and lived in Hela for over 16 years where he become a father to three children born in Tari.

The governor said he was an integral part of the community, and his tragic passing was a significant loss for the province.
