Prime Minister James Marape and NCD Governor Powes Parkop met this week to initiate plans for Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations, laying the groundwork for a year of major national events.

“This meeting ensures the National Government and municipal government are aligned on planning for this historic milestone,” said PM Marape.

The celebrations will run throughout 2025, with a full stakeholders' meeting scheduled for January 6 to finalize plans.

Among the highlights are the launch of PNG’s NRL team in February, a youth-focused initiative, and a series of events leading up to the main celebration on September 16, 2025.

“We expect up to 30 world leaders, including all Pacific leaders, to join us on Independence Day,” Marape announced.

In August, churches will host a national revival and reconciliation program. On August 30, a reconciliation ceremony will be held in Bougainville for those affected by the Bougainville crisis, involving police and defense forces.

The PNG Games are slated for Southern Highlands, with National Capital District on standby if needed. “We are committed to making Southern Highlands game-ready by September,” Marape affirmed.

The Education Department will also align the school calendar with the year’s events.

“It will be a busy year for all. I encourage our people to stay engaged and participate in the celebrations,” the Prime Minister said.

A comprehensive announcement will follow next week’s stakeholders' meeting.
