Opposition: Wisdom and reflection needed this year

Leader of the Opposition Douglas Tomuriesa has reminded the Government to be wise in its decision making for the good of the nation and its people.
Mr Tomuriesa said that with the country marking 50 years of Independence and nationhood this year, it is time that the incumbent government truly reflected on its performance and change course for the better.
“2025 is a very important year for us all as we commemorate half a century of Independence. Regardless of the challenges and struggles we have faced, it is incumbent on us all to take ownership of this milestone, commemorate the journey thus far, and look toward the next 50 years,"Tomuriesa said.
He said the Opposition welcomes the planning taking shape for the celebrations and recognize it will be a busy year for the Government to prepare for 16 September, while at the same time continuing its normal duties.
"But I must caution the Government early on to be transparent, sensible and wise with the way we execute this milestone.
“The country is still experiencing tough economic times, so the last thing our people need is costly and unnecessary spending that benefits no one.
“Let’s be sensible in how we celebrate and spend the people’s money, as it would be an injustice to our fore-leaders, and the very milestone we’re celebrating, if we recklessly dish out cash using Independence celebrations as an excuse.
“There should be zero tolerance on inflated contracts, zero tolerance on incompetent management, zero tolerance on cronyism, and zero tolerance on unwise decisions,” he said.
Mr Tomuriesa also highlighted that in the last five years, the Government has disappointingly rubbished the founding document of this nation – the Constitution – in its various attempts to amend and tamper with its contents.
“As we approach 16 September, I hope the Government seriously reflects on its actions that have contradicted the spirit of Independence.
"This year should be a turning point for our nation to finally stand up against actions that disrespect the efforts to develop this nation into a modern and thriving democracy.
“Finally, the Opposition will be expressing our interest to the Government to be involved in the planning of the celebrations, as we feel this event should be bipartisan as it is for us all to commemorate,” he added.
