As the year 2024 is about to end, government of Papua New Guinea [PNG] appreciates the Christian churches for tremendous contributions in the country.

It was acknowledged that the major Christian churches include Roman Catholic Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Seventh-day Adventist Church, the United Church, and the Anglican Church, among others and other Pentecostal and evangelical movements, such as the Assemblies of God and the Baptist Church have played pivotal role in shaping PNG.

These churches were introduced during the colonial era by missionaries who played a central role in spreading Christianity and establishing faith-based institutions.

Prime Minister James Marape said the churches have had a profound impact on shaping PNG’s moral and societal fabric.

Marape said they have been instrumental in education, health care, and community development, setting up schools, clinics, and vocational centers in remote areas.

He said churches have also served as mediators in resolving tribal conflicts and promoting peace and unity in a society deeply divided by cultural and linguistic diversity.

"Their teachings have shaped moral values, emphasizing community, family, and respect for one another.

"In governance, churches have been vocal advocates for social justice, transparency, and accountability, influencing policies and urging leaders to uphold ethical standards," Marape said.

He said as the nation eyes on celebrating 50th Golden Jubilee in 2025 churches will be heavily engaged.

"In 2025, the Church will lead key aspects of our Golden Jubilee celebrations. In August, churches across the country will host a month of prayer, repentance, and healing, culminating in the National Repentance Day on August 26.

"This will bring our people together in a spirit of humility and renewal,"Marape said.

Prime Minister Marape added that on August 30, 2025, Papua New Guinea and Bougainville will observe a Day of Reconciliation-a profound moment of healing and unity as PNG strengthen bonds and honor the shared commitment to peace and prosperity.
