Mama Bank staff brought joy and hope to patients at the Port Moresby General Hospital's Cancer Unit and Maternity Wing this Christmas season, delivering essential medicines, gifts, and heartfelt support.
The charity initiative, inspired by the bank’s board, was aimed at easing the struggles of cancer patients and mothers in need.
Mama Bank's team, led by Board Director Aleena Bird and HR Manager Bonnie Simon, ensured that their visit went beyond a gesture of goodwill—it was a mission to make a meaningful difference.
Bird explained that the charity drive was sparked by a heartbreaking story published in Post-Courier.
“One of the articles highlighted a woman battling cancer who couldn’t afford treatment due to the high cost of medication.
This deeply moved our board, and we immediately decided to establish a fund to assist such individuals whenever we could,” she said.
During their visit, the team donated 10 boxes of life-saving Capecitabine tablets for cancer patients, with the support of Discount Pharmacy, which offered a special rate to make the purchase possible.
Additionally, they presented 20 gift bags to children in the Cancer Ward, brightening their day with thoughtful presents.
The generosity didn’t stop there. In the Maternity Ward, the Mama Bank team distributed over 50 gift bags to new mothers, offering comfort and support to families during this special but often challenging time.
Simon emphasized the importance of giving back during the festive season.
“Our goal is to not only provide assistance but also share love and hope with those who need it most. The smiles we saw today reminded us why we do this,” she said.
Mama Bank’s ongoing commitment to community empowerment underpins its mission to create lasting, positive impacts.
The team expressed their determination to expand such initiatives in the future, ensuring that acts of kindness reach more people in need.
“This is just the beginning,” Simon added.
“We hope to continue spreading joy and making a difference in the lives of patients and families across Papua New Guinea.”
The bank’s efforts highlight the power of collective action and the spirit of giving, inspiring others to join in making the festive season brighter for those facing hardships.
