Hela Governor urges calm, vows justice for slain Police Officer

Hela Governor Philip Undialu has appealed to the family and relatives of the late Senior Police Officer George Lapon, particularly the Utupia community in Nipa-Kutubu District, Southern Highlands Province, to remain calm and allow law enforcement authorities to conduct their investigations.

Governor Undialu condemned the incident, emphasizing that it was the act of an individual and not a reflection of all Hela citizens.

“This attack is not just on one officer—it is an attack on the Hela Government, the Hela people, and the Police Force. Our priority is to bring those responsible to justice,” he said.

The governor highlighted that the incident does not represent the values of the Hela people, who are committed to peace, unity, and development.

He pointed out that the province has been making progress in areas such as education, small business development, and sports, driven by a focus on peacebuilding.

“It is only a small minority that engages in such violent and destructive acts,” Governor Undialu said, expressing frustration at the behavior of these individuals.

“They must stop tarnishing the reputation of Hela's law-abiding citizens. The people of Hela must not let this tragedy divide them but instead work together to ensure justice is served.”

Governor Undialu also called on all communities to condemn violence and support police efforts to identify and prosecute those involved.

He emphasized the importance of unity between the people of Hela and their neighbors in Southern Highlands Province, urging everyone to focus on preserving peace and progress.

Details of the incident remain unclear, and Acting Provincial Police Commander Robin Bore is expected to provide further updates later today.
