After a 36-year absence, the PNG Fire Services is making a historic return to Buka in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, marking a significant step in enhancing emergency services in the region.
The milestone was formalized on Friday through a Memorandum of Understanding [MOU] signed between PNG Fire Services Chief Fire Officer Bill Roo and the Autonomous Bougainville Government’s [ABG] Chief Secretary, Kearnneth Nanei, at the PNG Fire Services Headquarters in Port Moresby.
Chief Secretary Nanei revealed that ABG has already allocated prime land in Buka for the establishment of the critical infrastructure and equipment.
“After 36 years, we are finally seeing the re-establishment of fire services in Bougainville, this is a vital service that will provide protection and peace of mind for our people and businesses. From our end, we will ensure the proper allocation of land, manpower, and housing for staff to make this venture successful,” Mr. Nanei said.
Chief Fire Officer Bill Roo said that a fire truck designated for Buka is already stationed at the Alotau Wharf, awaiting shipment.
“The truck will arrive in Buka on 18th December [and] we will begin operations with 13 personnel on the ground, with plans to gradually expand our team and services.”
Once the Buka station becomes fully operational, the service will extend its reach to ensure safety across the autonomous region.
