Papua New Guinea's entry into the Australian National Rugby League Competition will see sports playing a bigger hand in foreign diplomacy with Australia.
Foreign Minister Justin Tkatchenko hailed the Australian Government, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and his cabinet for leading the bid at the highest level.
That includes a commitment by the Australian Government of monetary support of $600 million over 10 years to establish the important components for PNG to field a team in 2028.
"The Australian Governments hand in driving our NRL bid, ultimately resulting in this announcement is the biggest bilateral arrangement ever for both our countries, and with our partners,” PNG’s top diplomat said.
“People-to-people relations is the catalyst for stronger relations at all levels, be it business or diplomatic.
“The benefits that PNG and Australia stand to gain span over the very important areas that bring and bind two countries closer together - a shared history, day to day engagement at all levels, and increased economic opportunities and growth; all through our shared passion for rugby league.
“Additionally, we expect that these regular engagements will impact our people’s mindset, with an expected huge attitude shift, especially in our young Papua New Guineans.”
“We also extend appreciation and thanks to Peter V'landys, Andrew Abdo and the National Rugby League for the consideration and approval.
“Congratulations also to Prime Minister James Marape, for the leadership and commitment, our team of Ministers that led negotiations, PNGRFL Chairman Sandis Tsaka, and CEO of our Bid, Andrew Hill, we look forward to the journey ahead as we build on our eventual entry into the NRL Competition,” Minister Tkatchenko said.
