Addressing lawlessness remain priority: Police Minister

Police Minister Peter Tsiamalili Jr has recognized the pressing law-and-order challenges that accompany rapid development, notably increasing crime rates driven by economic pressures affecting communities.
Speaking during the PNG Resource Investment Conference in Australia this week, Mr. Tsiamalili said RPNGC is undergoing substantial reforms aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of police operations.
He said the restructuring of the Police Force, which has included the dismissal of over 400 officers deemed unfit for duty, the implementation of a zero-tolerance policy towards substance abuse, and a significant recruitment initiative aimed at expanding the force to 10,000 personnel by 2030.
"This is not just about increasing numbers, it’s about ensuring that we have a disciplined, capable police force that can effectively serve and protect our communities," Police Minister said.
The Minister also highlighted the record allocation of over K700 million in the 2025 National Budget for police operations, the highest in the nation’s history.
"This funding is crucial for equipping our police with the necessary tools and resources to combat crime and maintain order," he added.
He further added that they are committed to creating an environment conducive to business growth, and that begins with ensuring the safety of citizens and investors.
