The PNG Department of Education honored Antonia Warkia with the prestigious 'Distinguished Service Award' for extraordinary contribution to the nation’s education sector.
The award was presented at a vibrant ceremony in Port Moresby, where Assistant Secretary for Policy Planning, John Kawage, personally congratulated and handed her the certificate of recognition.
The event, marking its third edition since 2022, recognized 18 retired educationist.
Among them were ten school inspectors and nine professionals from Port Moresby, who joined Antonia in receiving this high honor.
Hailing from the Bogia District in Madang Province, Antonia Warkia devoted over 40 years of her life to shaping Papua New Guinea’s education landscape.
Her journey, deeply rooted in her Catholic faith and guided by the Lasallian mission of social justice and quality education for all, has left an indelible mark, particularly in rural schools of the Eastern Highlands.
Antonia began her career in 1978 after graduating from Holy Trinity Teachers College.
She taught at Pomakos Primary School in Enga before becoming a cornerstone of North Goroka Primary School in Eastern Highlands.
In 2007, she transitioned to a school inspector role in the Henganofi District of Eastern Highlands, spending 16 years working tirelessly to elevate the standards of education in rural areas.
"I always encourage teachers, especially women, to step into leadership roles like school inspection," Antonia shared.
"It’s in these positions that real change happens, and women’s voices make a significant impact."
A passionate advocate for empowering women in education, she has inspired countless female teachers to take up leadership roles, breaking barriers in a male-dominated field.
Beyond her professional life, Antonia raised seven children and is now a proud grandmother to many.
Her family and faith have been pillars of strength throughout her career.
Caspar Rurray, a colleague, lauded her legacy.
"Mrs. Warkia has not just taught lessons; she has shaped lives. Her influence as a teacher and inspector has been transformative for students, educators, and communities.
“Antonia’s dedication continues to inspire younger generations, proving that education is not just about knowledge but also about nurturing values and creating opportunities.
“Her work, deeply respected across Papua New Guinea, serves as a beacon of hope for educators striving to make a difference.”
