La Salle Technical Tops Grade 10 examination

La Salle Technical Secondary School in Port Moresby has secured the top position in Papua New Guinea’s 2024 Grade 10 national examinations.
This achievement reflects the collective efforts of students, teachers, and parents, supported by effective strategies and a strong community spirit.
In an interview with NBC Online, school principal Br. Antony Swami expressed his pride in the students’ performance.
“We started preparing from Grade 9 last year with regular meetings involving students, parents, and teachers. Their hard work exceeded my expectations.
"Initially aiming for a top-10 placement, the exceptional dedication of the students raised expectations to a top-three finish by mid-year.
"Out of 255 Grade 10 students, La Salle’s success was driven by innovative approaches, including daily testing to reinforce learning, peer group studies for collaborative learning, and consistent motivation from the school staff."
The school’s transition to a fully registered technical secondary school in 2022 played a pivotal role in this success.
Br. Antony acknowledged the initial challenges but emphasized the impact of admitting students from Sacred Heart Primary and Teddy River Primary.
“Parents gained confidence as they noticed positive changes in their children’s behavior and academic performance,” he said.
Grade 12 students also performed well this year. Of the 147 students who sat for their exams, Br. Antony anticipates that 120 will secure tertiary placements, calling it a significant milestone for the school.Br. Antony conveyed gratitude to the school community, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and teamwork.
“Everyone can succeed if they set their goals and continue motivating the youth. With proper guidance, our young people will thrive,” he said, while thanking parents, teachers, and the local community for their unwavering support.
La Salle’s outstanding performance shows its commitment to academic excellence and serves as an inspiration to schools across Papua New Guinea to aim higher and work collaboratively for success.
