A 17-year-old boy and six men from Goilala are in police custody after a routine vehicle check at the Eight Mile roundabout revealed 27.1 kilograms of marijuana in their vehicle.

The suspects were arrested by the National Capital District Commission [NCDC] police units last Wednesday while they were transporting the drugs in a ten-seater vehicle along the Hubert Murray Highway.

The marijuana was found neatly packed inside the vehicle, which was headed into the city.

All seven suspects will face criminal charges and are currently detained at the Boroko Police Station.

Acting NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Mazuc Rubiang commended the officers for their successful interception of the drugs.

He explained that the city's Drunk Patrol initiative, which includes random vehicle checks, has played a significant role in preventing crimes and decreasing serious incidents, particularly on weekends.

"Police have the authority to stop and search vehicles or individuals if they suspect an offense is being committed," Superintendent Rubiang stated.

"These patrols have led to a reduction in robberies, accidents, and other major crimes in the city.

As the festive season approaches, he urged the public to cooperate with police to enhance safety and law enforcement.

He also called on residents to respect city rules and noted that while most citizens abide by the law, a few continue to break it, causing problems for others.
