The Southern Highlands Provincial Government is committed to complete major sporting facilities in preparation for the highly anticipated PNG Unity Games in 2026.
Governor William Powi on Friday handed over more than K20 million to lead contractors, a budget allocated through the Southern Highlands Provincial Assembly.
Governor Powi emphasized that this initiative goes beyond sports, aiming to enhance infrastructure in the province.
"We are committed to improving schools by providing clean water, electricity, and better classrooms."
The provincial government has identified 33 schools across Southern Highlands to host 14 different sporting codes during the games.
In addition to constructing the main stadium and supporting facilities, the provincial government plans to partner with corporate organizations to upgrade water and electricity supplies in these schools, ensuring they can accommodate the influx of athletes and officials.
"The Southern Highlands Provincial Government, together with the Assembly and Members of Parliament, stands united in this cause,” Governor Powi said.
"We intend to deliver not just a successful Unity Games but also lasting infrastructure for our people.”
The PNG Unity Games, a symbol of national solidarity, will bring athletes and communities together from across Papua New Guinea.
