The Simbu Provincial Government is fueling excitement this year by supporting the Governor’s Cup, drawing impressive crowds, and laying the groundwork for a potential 2025 bid for the CBL Simbu Warriors team.
This grassroots initiative aims to scout and nurture young rugby league talent, offering a strong foundation for the Warriors if they secure their place in the 2025 competition.
Currently, games are underway across three affiliated leagues, with 56 teams set to advance to the Governor’s Cup competition in Simbu.
In the Elabari League of Chuave, 14 men’s and 12 women’s teams are competing, while the SSY League boasts 16 men’s and 16 women’s teams. The Gumini League includes 18 teams, with nine each for men and women.
"We’ve had to pause the Digini League this year," Said Michael Robert, Chairman of the CBL Simbu Warriors franchise.
"The league is affiliated with the PNGRFL, and we plan to kick off next year.”
The tournament features four pools for men’s teams and two for women’s teams.
Currently, the men’s teams have completed their first four pools and are preparing for the semi-finals, which will be held in Minj.
“This Governor’s Cup is about spotting raw talent,” said Robert.
“The selected players will move forward to our training camps, where they’ll hone their skills to meet PNGRFL standards. We’re excited to see these young players develop into top-tier talent.”
Robert is optimistic about the future of rugby league in Simbu, noting that this season has brought positive changes.
“We have a strong board with professional members dedicated to the success of the Warriors. Next year, we’re aiming to present a formidable team that can challenge the competition and support the PNGFRL in developing rugby league for years to come.”
