Samarai-Murua DDA buys fishing boat

The Samarai-Murua District Development Authority has launched its new fishing vessel, MV Kekeisi, to expand fishing and export activities in this Milne Bay District.
The state-of-the-art vessel, built in Thailand is equipped with advanced facilities, including freezers, ice-making machine, processing areas, and packaging capabilities, making it a self-contained- factory on water.
Local MP Isi Henry Leonard emphasized that MV Kekeisi is designed not just as a fishing boat, but as a service enabler for the district’s fishing community.
“This vessel is a complete factory.
“Fishermen can catch, process, and freeze their fish on board, which allows them to maintain high quality and meet international standards.
"We’re bringing in all the necessary tools and gears, empowering locals on each island to fish, with MV Kekeisi purchasing directly from them.
"This initiative is rural, but it’s export-driven, aiming to connect local fishers to global markets.” Leonard said.
The launch of MV Kekeisi is part of a broader program that Mr. Leonard has championed since 2018.
The vessel is procured from Thailand, and Thai crew members will not only operate the vessel but will train locals to build similar boats.
“They’ll come to teach us how to design and build boats. While we have our own boat-building skills, this collaboration will enhance our capabilities and potentially create a fleet," Mr. Leonard reveled.
"With the right training and tools, local fishers could start catching between five and ten tons overnight."
Prime Minister James Marape attended the commissioning, reinforcing his government’s commitment to supporting local economies through the Kina-to-Kina program.

"Despite political pressures, we are determined to support the districts,” Mr. Marape said.
"Seeing DSIP and program funds used for initiatives like this is a pleasure. Each district should focus on projects that build wealth and empower their communities. Fishing, particularly with MV Kekeisi, is a promising avenue.”
MV Kekeisi will set sail for Million Bay in the coming days, poised to transform the fishing industry in Samarai-Murua, creating new jobs, fostering skills development, and opening doors to international markets.
