PNG will meet the Solomons in round 2 of the OFC Beach Soccer Men’s Nations Cup after a stunning 8-6 victory over Fiji yesterday.

Following a historic win against Fiji in their first-ever participation in a beach soccer tournament, the PNG outfit powered by Fisherman Islanders anticipates a tough encounter, playing the host side this afternoon (2 pm kick-off).

Solomon Islanders were shocked by Tahiti in a 10-9 defeat and would be eager to bounce back when they face PNG in Honiara.

But PNG coach Babob Labong said they’re primed for the challenge as the match against Fiji showcased their capabilities despite carrying the underdog tag.

Labong said they would stick to their game plan and focus on what they can do while ensuring a robust defense to hold their opponents to account.

“We will follow our normal game and stick to how we have started this campaign against Fiji,” the coach said of playing Solomon Islands and the home crowd.

“But we’re going to adjust our defense. Our defense failed to contain Fiji's quick comeback, so we will try to improve that against Solomon Islands.”

Known for their success in beach soccer, the Solomon Islanders are forestalling a strong performance in front of their home fans following yesterday's narrow loss.

The host side will not be underestimating the PNG outfit after Labong’s men surprised Fiji in the opener.

PNG’s top performer from round 1 Ellygia Benard who put on a player-of-the-match showdown is expected to lead their attack as the Moukele Soccer Association-dominated team aims for a second win.

“This is my first time to participate, and I can’t describe the feeling,” Benard said after the 2-point victory.

The youngster scored the fastest goal in the history of the OFC Beach Soccer Men’s Nations Cup within one and a half seconds as PNG registered its maiden win in the first beach international appearance.
