Papua New Guinea Rugby Union has lost its membership from Oceania Rugby after being suspended for non-compliance.

The suspension by the Regional Association of World Rugby, means PNG will not compete in any regional, Oceania or International competitions until the suspension is lifted.

PNGRU were issued a 'Notice of Determination' by the Oceania Rugby Executive Board on Thursday, after numerous flaws by the PNG governing body to comply with orders allotted by the Regional Association of World Rugby.

Some of the persisting matters prompting the suspension include failure to attend the Oceania Rugby Women’s Championships in Brisbane and the Olympic 7s repechage qualification tournament.

PNG rugby board’s conduct is among other issues that have contributed to PNG being kicked out of the regional body.

General manager of Oceania Rugby, Frank Puletua said the decision to suspend PNG was in the best interest of stakeholders and the future of rugby in PNG.

Puletua assured the board’s support to PNG to ensure the country regains its full membership.

"As a result of non-compliance to the Notice of Orders issued by Oceania Rugby in July, the Executive Board have had to make the difficult decision [Thursday] to suspend the membership of Papua New Guinea Rugby Union, effective immediately," he said.

"Whilst this decision is one that we do not take lightly, it has been determined with the interests of all stakeholders involved with PNG Rugby in mind.

"I am confident that PNG will be in a position to activate its true potential on the national and world rugby stage in the not-too-distant future, and the Executive Board remain committed to supporting PNG Rugby in its endeavors to being recognised as a full member of Oceania Rugby again."
