The hopes of the PNG men's basketball team for the Pacific Games qualifiers have been shattered.

In a very close determining final pool match on Wednesday afternoon against New Caledonia, PNG went down, 75-85.

Four minutes into the third quarter the teams tied 50-50. The close match continued into the final quarter, but the New Caledonian's had the advantage of height and weight and several fouls cost PNG dearly.

The team will now be playing for the 5th and 6th placings. They managed to secure two wins and suffered one loss in their earlier matches. But PNG has made its mark in the Solomon Island games.

In their first pool match, PNG thrashed the host team, 81-34. Although putting up a good challenge against the last pacific games gold medalist Guam, they lost, 96-77.

Their third match against Samoa was a close one but the team managed to come out on top registering their second win 87-72.

Meanwhile the Womens basketball team are out of the 17th Pacific games, after failing to secure any wins from their three matches.
