The PNG men's volleyball team caused a major upset on Wednesday afternoon, crushing the reigning champions of the 2019 Pacific Games.

Bringing down the might of the 2019 volleyball gold medallists in an entertaining contest, PNG defeated Tahiti 3 sets to 2.

The men won all their four pool matches and step into the next stage, while volleyball champions Tahiti received their first defeat at the hands of the underdogs.

The showdown at the Friendship Hall, Honiara was one of the great unscripted volleyball victories of the Solomon Islands Pacific Games.

PNG now advance to the qualifying finals, undefeated in all four of their pool matches, and were the only team to beat Tahiti in the pool stage.

The win left team manager Ronald Omoa a happy man. The dream of a podium finish, nurtured since preparation started months before the Pacific Games, now looks near.
