Mixed fortunes for PNG’s volleyballers at Pacific Games

Papua New Guinea’s men’s volleyball team remains undefeated after three matches at the Pacific Games, after a 3-0 win over Fiji on Tuesday evening.

However, PNG women's volleyball team went down to American Samoa in straight sets.

The height advantages of the Fijians did not scare the Papua New Guineans at the 17th edition of the Pacific Games, being played this year in Solomon Islands’ capital Honiara.

PNG outplayed the Fijians with well-structured set plays and a brick wall defence at the net.

The Fijians had no answers to the PNG attack, and failed to win a set.

But on the opposite side of the courts, the PNG Women's team were unable to get back into the winning rhythm.

Playing at the same time as the men's match, they fell to the might of the American Samoans.

After opening the 2023 games with a nail-biting finish, the women's volleyball team has now registered back-to-back straight sets losses.

The men’s team’s final group match is against Tahiti later today (Wednesday).
