Researchers challenged to turn knowledge into innovation

Researchers have been challenged to connect local knowledge with science and technology to develop innovations that can have a meaningful impact on Papua New Guinea.

The challenge was made during the opening of the 8th Papua New Guinea Science and Technology Conference in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province.

Themed “Refocusing Science, Technology and Innovation for Inclusive Growth, Resilience and Prosperity for the Future,” the three-day conference brings together scientists, academics, researchers, students and development partners.

Participants are sharing ideas, research and innovations, while looking at ways to connect local knowledge with science and technology to address challenges facing the country.

Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology and Unggai-Bena MP Kinoka Feo delivered his opening address via Zoom from China, highlighting the role of technology in shaping PNG’s future.

“What kind of future do we want science, research, and technology to help build for PNG?” Minister Feo asked

He said science, research and technology should be measured by their ability to improve people’s lives, strengthen institutions, create opportunities, protect the environment and respond to national challenges.

As he formally declared the conference open, Minister Feo challenged researchers to apply emerging technologies to present-day realities and develop innovations that can influence government policy and provide practical solutions for communities.

The conference is funded by the PNG Science and Technology Council Secretariat and hosted by the University of Goroka in partnership with the PNG Institute of Medical Research.
